    3 arrested in DU student Shammo murder case

    Police have arrested three people in connection with the murder of Shahriar Shammo (25), a student of the 18-19 session of the Education and Research Department of Dhaka University (DU) and Sir A.F. Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal’s Literature and Publications Secretary, in the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan. On Wednesday (May 14) morning, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Khalid Munsur said that three people have been arrested. It is being investigated whether anyone else is involved in the incident.

    In the morning, the deceased’s elder brother Shariful Islam filed a case with Shahbagh DMP’s Shahbagh Police Station accusing 10 to 12 people in the murder case. Earlier, they were arrested from several areas including Rajabazar in the capital on Tuesday (May 13) night.

    The arrested are: Md., son of Ershad Howlader of Madaripur Sadar. Tamim Hawlader (30), Kalam Sardar’s son Palash Sardar (30) and Jatindranath Mallick’s son Samrat Mallick (28) of Dasar police station.

    After the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Masud Alam said at night that three young university students attacked Shammo near Kalimandir in Suhrawardy Udyan. The attackers were also injured. They were receiving treatment at a clinic. Upon receiving information, the police arrested two of them from there. Another young man fled at that time. Efforts are underway to arrest him.

    He also said that initially it was learned that a fight broke out near Ramna Kalimandir over a motorcycle collision. In this, the Dhaka University student was stabbed to death. Multiple police teams are working to find out the details.

    The deceased Shammo is the literary and publishing affairs secretary of Sir AF Rahman Hall of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal. As soon as the news of his death spread, university students including Chhatra Dal leaders and activists began gathering at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Leaders and activists were seen staying in the hospital’s emergency department and premises even at midnight.

    Bayezid, a friend of Shammo, who was stabbed to death by a miscreant, said that around 11:30 pm, Shahriar Alam Shammo, Bayezid Abdullah and Rafi were leaving a motorcycle through the gate of Ramna Kali Mandir adjacent to Suhrawardy Udyan. At that time, their motorcycle collided with another motorcycle.

    He said that the rider on the other motorcycle became agitated. Another 10-12 people with him arrived at the scene on four motorcycles. Shammo and his friends had an argument with them. The Shammo were shocked by the suddenness of the incident. Everyone in the group started beating Shammo. At one point in the fight, one of them stabbed Shammo with a knife. Two friends were also injured.

    Bayezid said that none of the group was from the Dhaka University campus. So they could not identify any of them. But one person was detained. Seeing that Shammo’s condition was deteriorating, they handed him over to the people present there and took Shammo to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Later, it is learnt that he was also released.

    Shammo was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a bloody state around 12 midnight, where the doctors declared him dead.
