    7 former ministers and MPs arrested in new case

    A court has approved the application to show the arrest of 7 people, including Awami League presidium member and former minister Amir Hossain Amu and former law minister Anisul Haque, in a separate case filed by Jatrabari Police Station in the capital over the anti-discrimination student movement.

    Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman issued the order on Wednesday (May 14).

    They were brought to the court in the morning. Then the investigation officers of the case applied to show their arrest.

    The other accused are former ministers Shajahan Khan, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haque Inu, former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and former MP Kazi Monirul Islam Monu.

    Among them, Anisul Haque has been arrested in three cases, Monirul Islam Monu in three cases, Amir Hossain Amu in two cases, Rashed Khan Menon in two cases, Hasanul Haque Inu in two cases, Junaid Palak in two cases, and Shajahan Khan in one case. The cases were filed during the anti-discrimination movement.

    Meanwhile, the court has granted a two-day remand of former Home Secretary Jahangir Alam in the murder case filed at Bangshal Police Station in the capital over the killing of Sheikh Mehedi Hasan Junaid during the anti-discrimination student movement.

    The same court gave this order after the hearing. He was produced in the court in the morning. Later, the remand hearing was held in his presence.

    At this time, the defendant’s lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi rejected the remand and applied for bail. On the other hand, the state opposed bail. After hearing both sides, the court rejected bail and ordered remand. Earlier, on April 12, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Inspector Tapas Chandra Pandit applied for Jahangir Alam’s five-day remand in the case. On that day, the court fixed the hearing in the presence of the accused.

    Jahangir Alam was arrested on October 1 last year. Since then, he has been detained in jail. Since then, he has been shown arrested in multiple cases.

    According to sources in the case, Sheikh Mehedi Hasan Junaid Mostaqeen participated in a procession on August 5 during the anti-discrimination student movement. On that day, the accused started firing at the students and the public in the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute area. The victim, Sheikh Mehedi Hasan Junaid Mostaqeen, was shot in the head by a bullet fired by the accused. Later, he was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital (Mitford) where the doctor on duty declared him dead. A murder case was registered at Bangshal Police Station on September 5 in this incident.
