Shammo murder: 48-hour ultimatum to arrest those involved

The Dhaka University (DU) campus was in a state of uproar over the murder of a student. The protesters have one demand: those involved in the murder of classmate Shahriar Alam Shammo should be arrested and brought to justice within 48 hours.

On Friday (May 16) morning, DU students gathered at the foot of the Raju Statue. From there, they marched in front of Shahbagh Police Station with banners and placards in hand and took a stand demanding justice.

The students alleged that the lack of prompt arrest of those involved in the murder has raised questions about the trial process. They demanded a safe campus and the prompt arrest of the main accused.

During the police station siege, a delegation of teachers and students met with senior police officials. After the meeting, they said that if those involved in the murder are not arrested within 48 hours, the agitation will resume from Sunday.

Shammo was stabbed to death during an argument over a motorcycle collision at Suhrawardy Udyan on Tuesday night. Since then, students have taken to the streets demanding a fair trial.
