Major Jalish Mahmud Khan, Deputy Director of CPC-2 and RAB-4, confirmed the arrest at around 2 am on Friday (May 16). Earlier in the evening, he was arrested in a joint operation conducted in Dupchanchia area of Bogra district. Arrested Sajjad Hossain Manik is the son of Akkas Ali Molla of Naogaon Sadar. He brought his wife to Savar by saying that he was traveling from Naogaon for the purpose of killing. The deceased wife’s name is Rumana Akhter (18), she is the daughter of Md. Rafiqul Islam of Sonara village of Pirgachha police station in Rangpur district.
Rab said that after Sajjad met Romana Akhter through his mobile phone, they got married with the consent of both families on July 30 last year. Since marriage, Romana has been living with her husband in her in-laws’ house in Naogaon. However, there was a constant family feud between them. Due to this, Sajjad used to physically and mentally abuse his wife Romana. The matter was discussed several times locally. However, on April 10, Sajjad Hossain came to visit his elder brother’s rented house in Savar with his wife Rumana. On April 23, at around 9 am, Romana’s father learned that his daughter had been strangled to death. Upon receiving the news, Romana’s father went to the scene and learned from locals that his daughter had been strangled to death between 8:30 am and 9 am. After the murder, Sajjad called the national emergency service 999 and fled. Romana’s father filed a murder case with Savar Model Police Station as the complainant. After filing the case, RAB-4 started a shadow investigation. Later, Sajjad was arrested from Bogra in a joint operation by RAB-4 and RAB-12.
Major Jalish Mahmud Khan, Deputy Director of CPC-2, RAB-4, said that the arrested Sajjad confessed during initial interrogation that he had strangled his wife to death due to a family dispute. Further legal action against him is under process.
