Elections must be held by December: Amir Khasru
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has made it clear that elections must be held by December.
He said, ‘The government is running as if it is an elected government. The government is repeatedly saying that everything will be done through reforms and consensus. But they do not say where that consensus is. This is an interim government, their responsibility was to hold a fair election and hand over power to the elected government.’
He said these things while speaking on contemporary issues at Hotel Sarina in Gulshan on Sunday (May 18).
Amir Khasru said, ‘Bangladesh is in an uncertain situation, no one knows where the country is going. Everyone has said goodbye to dictatorship. The democratic process that the country will go through since then is not working.’
He said, ‘The nation is in a state of anxiety. The more the election is delayed, the more the country is being pushed towards instability. Instead of holding an election, it is being rushed in the other direction. Who gave them these powers?’
This BNP leader also said, ‘The issues of the mayor of the south, the orders of the court must be implemented accordingly. They are not being implemented. Different types of people are constantly taking responsibility. Who are these?
Regarding the reform proposal, he said, ‘It must be reformed in the way the people want through a democratic process.’
Regarding the recruitment of new members for the party, Amir Khasru said, ‘We will recruit new members, but we will recruit new members according to the criteria of whether they have social acceptability. We want to have a stable politics of coexistence in Bangladesh. We do not want any conflicting politics. We will oppose those who want to take it in a different direction in various ways.’
He said, ‘All the elections that will be held in the upcoming elections should be held through a fair democratic process. This should become a routine. The government is losing trust, which is unfortunate for the country. The issue of banning the Awami League was mentioned two months ago, which I have written. That is, through the legal process. But why did the government play the game, people wonder.’
Says Amir Khasru, noting that decisions like bringing in outside operators to the port should be made with public support, ‘Decisions should be made through a political process. There are many things involved in this. It is not just a matter of investment. The government is doing everything except elections. Who gave them the responsibility for everything?’
