    EU lifts sanctions on Syria

The European Union (EU) is lifting economic sanctions on Syria. The EU has taken this decision to help rebuild the war-torn country. Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported this information in a report on Wednesday (May 21).

The report said that ambassadors from the 27 EU member states have already reached a preliminary agreement on this decision. The announcement is expected to be made officially at a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels on Tuesday (May 20) local time.

“We want to help the Syrian people build a new, inclusive and peaceful Syria,” EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas Kallas said in a post on social media X (Twitter) after a meeting with ministers in Brussels.

He also said that the EU has always stood by Syria for the past 14 years — and will continue to do so.

It is worth noting that Syria, facing more than ten years of conflict, humanitarian crisis, and economic disaster, is now looking to the Western world for international assistance and reconstruction.
