UK suspends trade talks with Israel, summons ambassador
The UK has suspended trade talks with Israel due to the military operation in Gaza. The British government has also summoned the country’s ambassador. This information was revealed in a statement by the British media outlet BBC.
According to the report, the country’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy told the House of Commons that they have suspended negotiations on a new free trade agreement with Israel. He said, “We will review the issue of cooperation under the 2030 bilateral relations roadmap. The actions of the Netanyahu government have made this decision necessary.”
He also said that the Israeli ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Office and told that Israel’s blockade of Gaza is “unsustainable”.
According to him, the conflict there has entered a “new phase of darkness”. He said that fewer than 10 aid trucks were allowed to enter Gaza yesterday, which was “abhorrent”.
Lammy said that Netanyahu’s government was “damaging the image of the State of Israel in the eyes of the world. Despite our efforts, the Israeli government’s atrocious actions and rhetoric continue.”
He told the Israeli people, “The war in Gaza is ruining our relationship with your government.” He said that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government made this decision by the UK necessary.
He said, “Prime Minister Netanyahu, end the blockade now and let the aid in.”
