Momtaz remanded for 6 days
The court has granted a 6-day remand to singer and former MP from Manikganj 2 constituency Momtaz Begum in two separate cases in Manikganj.
The former MP was taken to the Manikganj court jail. On Thursday (May 22) at around 9:30 am, she was taken to the Manikganj court’s coat jail from Dhaka Kashimpur jail.
According to court sources, she was taken to the Manikganj Senior Sessions and Judge Court as an accused in the 2024 murder case of four people in Singair’s Gobindal. The judge of this court is Nur Hossain.
On May 13, the investigating officer of the case, Monirul Islam, applied for a seven-day remand of the accused. On the other hand, his lawyers applied for the cancellation of the remand of the accused and sought bail.
After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jewel Rana rejected the bail of the accused and granted a four-day remand. Earlier, he was arrested from Dhanmondi in the capital at 12:12 am on Monday (May 12).
According to the case sources, the victim Md. Sagar participated in the anti-discrimination student movement in the Mirpur-10 roundabout area on July 19 last year. At around 4:30 pm on that day, the accused attacked and fired at the protesters. At that time, the victim was shot in the chest and exited through the back of his body. He later died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mirpur.
In this incident, on November 27, the mother of the deceased, Mosa. Beauty Akhter, filed a murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station as the plaintiff. In it, the names of 243 people, including Sheikh Hasina, were mentioned. In addition, 250-400 people were named as unknown accused in the case. Momtaz Begum is the 49th accused in the case.
Artist Momtaz became a member of parliament in 2008 on the reserved women’s seat nominated by the Awami League. Later, in the disputed elections of 2014 and 2018, he was re-elected as a member of parliament from Manikganj-2 constituency using the boat symbol. However, in the 2024 national parliamentary elections, Momtaz lost to an independent candidate in his own constituency, Manikganj-2.
