    Former MP Momtaz in Manikganj court

    Former MP and singer Momtaz Begum has been produced in Manikganj court to participate in the hearing of the case filed in the shooting death of four people in Singair, Manikganj in 2013.

    On Thursday (May 22) morning, she was brought to the Manikganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court from Kashimpur Central Jail. Khorshed Alam and Zahid Khan Ujjal were present as lawyers for her in the hearing. Earlier, after a four-day remand, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court sent her to jail. Momtaz Begum was first elected as an MP from the reserved women’s seat nominated by the Awami League in 2008. Later, she was elected as an MP from the Manikganj-2 constituency in 2014 and 2018. However, she was defeated by the party’s rebel candidate Zahid Ahmed Tulu in the 2024 elections.

    Currently, she is the president of Singair Upazila Awami League. In addition to allegations of transport extortion, tender rigging, recruitment and position trading, there are multiple cases of murder, assault and vandalism against him in various police stations in Manikganj and Dhaka. While he was an MP, he came into the spotlight for his controversial statements about Ziaur Rahman and singing songs in the parliament session.
