Warship breaks down on inauguration day, Kim reacts angrily
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has condemned a serious accident during the launch of a new warship. Calling it a criminal act, he said it is something that cannot be tolerated.
On Thursday (May 22), North Korean state media reported that a “serious accident” occurred during the inauguration of a 5,000-ton destroyer ship in the eastern port of Chongjin on Wednesday.
The report said that while the ship was being launched in the presence of Kim Jong Un, some of the lower parts broke and the ship lost its balance. It is said that this happened due to inexperience and operational negligence.
Kim, who was present at the launch ceremony, ordered the ship to be restored before an important party meeting in June. He ordered those involved in the design of the ship to be held accountable for the incident. He said, “In a moment, the dignity and pride of our nation have been seriously damaged.”
North Korean state media did not mention any casualties or injuries as a result of the incident. Kim blamed Wednesday’s accident on “complete carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific inexperience.” He added that the irresponsible mistakes of those involved would be addressed at a plenary meeting next month. It was not clear what punishment they might face. A month ago, North Korea launched another 5,000-ton destroyer-class ship, the Cho Hyon. Kim Jong-un was present at the ceremony with his daughter Kim Ju-ae. North Korea claims that the Cho Hyon is equipped with the latest weapons and will begin operations early next year.
