9 arrested in Laxmipur Awami League leader abducted in handcuffs
A case has been filed with the police station in Kamalnagar, Laxmipur, for obstructing police work and abducting Awami League leader Ashraf Uddin Rajan Raju in handcuffs. On Saturday (May 25) morning, Kamalnagar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Pradeep Chandra Shil filed the case naming 26 people and 150 others as accused, including unidentified names.
Earlier, police conducted a raid in the Charkadira area late at night and early in the morning and arrested 9 accused. The arrested are: Milan (48), Shembhu Chandra Das (66) and his wife Ira Das (50), Sri Trikut Chandra Das (52), Abdur Rahim (27), Sanjit Chandra Das (42), Nur Alam (55), Helal Uddin (32) and Md. Abbas Uddin (40). Police said that they are all residents of Charkadira Union of the upazila and followers of Awami League leader Raju.
Kamalnagar Police Station OC Mohammad Tohidul Islam confirmed the arrest and said that the arrested have been sent to court. A drive is underway to arrest the other accused. The arrested are directly involved in Awami League politics. They have created obstacles in the arrest of the accused by misleading the common people.
It is worth mentioning that on Saturday (May 24) afternoon, the police arrested Upazila Awami League leader Ashraf Uddin Rajan Raju from in front of his own house in Charthika village of Charkadira Union. At that time, several hundred of his followers, both men and women, gathered and started a protest in the presence of the police. Later, the protesters snatched Raju from the hands of the police along with his handcuffs.
Upon receiving the information, Kamalnagar Police Station OC Mohammad Tohidul Islam went to the spot. There, he called on the agitated crowd to remain calm and left the scene with the blocked police members. Ashraf Uddin Rajan Raju is the vice-president of Kamalnagar Upazila Awami League and former chairman of Charkadira Union Parishad.
