    Major Sinha murder case: Death sentence of OC Pradeep and Liaquat upheld

    The High Court has upheld the death sentence of OC Pradeep Kumar Das and Inspector Liaquat Ali in the murder case of retired army Major Sinha Md. Rashed Khan. The life sentence of the remaining 6 accused in the case has been upheld. At the same time, the order to fine each accused Tk 50,000 is upheld.

    On Monday (June 2), a High Court bench comprising Justice Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Sagir Hossain announced the verdict.

    Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, Deputy Attorney General Shamima Dipti heard the case for the state in the court. Deputy Attorney General Jasim Sarkar, Assistant Attorney General Barrister Sumaiya Aziz, Laboni Akhter were present.

    Senior lawyer SM Shahjahan, Justice Mansurul Haque Chowdhury, lawyers Sheikh Md. Jahangir Alam and Dulal Mallick heard the case for the accused.

    Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was shot dead by police at the Shamlapur checkpost on Teknaf Marine Drive road on the night of July 31, 2020. The District and Sessions Judge Court of Cox’s Bazar delivered its verdict in the case on January 31, 2022. In the verdict, Teknaf Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Das and Baharchhara Police Investigation Center Inspector Liakat Ali were sentenced to death and six other accused were sentenced to life imprisonment.

    The accused appealed to the High Court against this verdict. The state party applied for approval of the death sentence of two others.
