Ishraq supporters protest again over oath issue
His supporters have staged a protest rally in front of the Dhaka South City Corporation’s Nagar Bhaban demanding Ishraq Hossain’s oath as mayor. BNP leader Ishraq Hossain has called on the chief advisor to take responsibility and resolve the crisis.
He made this call while joining the protest program on Sunday (June 15). Earlier, Ishraq Hossain had announced a temporary relaxation of the movement ahead of Eid-ul-Azha on June 3.
Ishraq said that this movement demanding the oath will continue without interruption. At the same time, he said that from now on, Nagar Bhaban will be under their supervision. No official will be able to work. However, daily service activities will continue.
At the same time, he complained that the oath has not been taken so far due to the apolitical behavior of Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan. The BNP leader urged the government to arrange for the oath ceremony as soon as possible.
Incidentally, the last Dhaka South City Council (DSCC) election was held on February 1, 2020. Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh of the Awami League defeated Ishraq Hossain by a margin of two and a half lakh votes and became mayor. Ishraq, a member of the BNP’s International Affairs Committee, filed a case on March 3, 2020, alleging irregularities and corruption in the election and seeking to cancel the results. On March 27, the Dhaka Election Tribunal annulled the results and declared Ishraq the mayor. Then, on April 27, the Election Commission (EC) published a gazette declaring Ishraq the DSCC mayor.
