Jamaat did not attend the meeting of the consensus commission

The second phase of the meeting of the National Consensus Commission with political parties is underway. Representatives of BNP, NCP, CPB, BSD, Islami Andolan and other political parties participated in it, but Jamaat-e-Islami did not attend.

The meeting was supposed to start after 11 am on Tuesday (June 17) at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, but the meeting was delayed waiting for Jamaat representatives.

When contacted, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar’s personal officer received the phone. When asked whether the party leaders would come to the dialogue or not, he said, “I will talk to him and let you know.” Later, he said, “If Jamaat joins the dialogue, the media will be informed.”

Meanwhile, in his opening speech at the meeting, Vice-Chairman of the commission, Professor Ali Riaz, said that it is possible to prepare a national charter in July if the political parties cooperate.

He also said that even if they do not agree with all the proposals of the commission, political parties will have to make concessions in the interest of the nation.

It is learned that the amendment to Article 70 of the Constitution, appointment of parliamentary standing committees from the opposition, election of women’s seats, appointment of the Chief Justice, and the upper house of parliament will be discussed in today’s meeting.
