Main accused arrested in the case of destruction of Babui bird nests and killing of chicks
The district detective police have arrested the main accused in the case filed in the case of destruction of more than a hundred Babui bird nests and killing of chicks by cutting down a palm tree in the Purba Guatan area of Jhalokati Sadar Upazila. The main accused, Mobarak Fakir, was arrested from the Nesarabad police station area of Pirojpur on Sunday (June 29) afternoon.
The palm tree on the government road next to the land owned by Mobarek Ali Fakir of Guatan village was known as a safe habitat for Babui birds for a long time. There were numerous nests, eggs and chicks of Babui birds in this tree. Mobarek Ali Fakir sold the tree to a person named Mizanur Rahman. As a result of cutting down the palm tree, about five hundred chicks and eggs were destroyed. The locals were shocked by the killing of this wildlife.
Locals say that this palm tree was not just a tree, it was a center of animal diversity. Those who did this have committed a crime against nature. Conscious people have immediately demanded strict action against the accused under the Environmental Act. The remaining accused have gone into hiding since the incident. Jhalokati Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Farhana Yasmin said that after knowing about this incident, we sent a forest officer to the spot. A case will be filed against the accused under the Wildlife Conservation Act.
Babui birds are a beneficial and protected species for the environment of Bangladesh. The aesthetics and social behavior of their nests are admired worldwide. Such barbarity has not only destroyed biodiversity, but also questioned human values.
