Trump imposes 50 percent tariff on Brazil
US President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 40 percent tariff on Brazilian goods. This brings the total tariff imposed by the United States on Brazil to 50 percent. According to the British media BBC, On Wednesday (July 30), Trump signed an executive order in this regard, the White House said. The order also called for the imposition of direct tariffs along with “politically motivated repression, intimidation, harassment, censorship and the prosecution of Bolsonaro” in Brazil. However, Trump had previously warned against the issue of imposing high tariffs on imports from the Latin American country. Earlier this month, he threatened Brazil’s current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva with large tariffs. In it, Brazil was accused of “attacking” US technology companies and taking “harassing measures” against Bolsonaro. The White House said the United States will impose sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes for alleged unlawful detention and suppression of “freedom of expression.” Judge Moraes is leading an investigation into former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his associates, who are accused of plotting a coup after he lost the 2022 election. Brazil, meanwhile, has threatened to retaliate against any tariffs imposed by the United States.
