3 killed in stampede during Rath Yatra
Three people, including two women, were killed in a stampede during a historic Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, India. Several others were injured in the incident. The incident took place between 4 and 5 am local time on Sunday (June 29) near Gundicha Temple, three kilometers from the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, India. The deceased were identified as Basanti Sahu of Bolagarh, Premakant Mohanty and Prabhati Das of Balipatna.
The Indian media Hindustan Times claims that a stampede broke out when many devotees started competing to hold the ropes of the chariot and many were crushed under the pressure of the crowd.
