    All 289 workers trapped in gold mine in South Africa rescued

    All 289 workers trapped in a gold mine near Johannesburg, South Africa, have been rescued, Anadolu Agency reported, citing mine officials.

    The accident occurred on Thursday (May 22) at the gold mine, located about 37 miles west of Johannesburg. 289 workers were trapped in the mine. Rescue operations began immediately after the accident.

    The gold mining company Sibanye-Stillwater said in a statement on Saturday (May 24) that all the workers had been safely brought up. There was no risk of injury to any of the workers at any stage of the rescue operation.

    The statement also said that extensive safety measures and an assessment of the overall condition of the mine were taken before the miners were safely brought up.

    It said that rescue and security teams were immediately deployed after the accident and measures were taken to ensure the safe supply of food and water to the workers.

    The statement also mentioned that all the rescued miners will undergo a thorough medical examination and support will be provided to the families of the workers.

    “Operations will only resume once all safety and risk assessments are completed and the mine is deemed safe. Safety is our priority and we will not resume operations until we are certain.”
