Appellate Division orders to revoke Jamaat’s registration
The country’s highest court has ordered the Election Commission (EC) to revoke the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. It has also left it to the EC to resolve other issues including the party’s ‘scale’ symbol.
A four-judge appeal bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed announced the verdict on Sunday (June 1) morning.
Barrister Ehsan Abdullah Siddique, Barrister Imran Abdullah Siddique, Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir, Barrister Najib Momen, Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Kashem appeared for Jamaat in the court.
The High Court, after disposing of a writ petition, declared Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration invalid and cancelled it on August 1, 2013. Then, on December 7, 2018, the Election Commission (EC) issued a notification canceling Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration.
