    Barrister Sumon banned from leaving the country

    The court has banned Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, former member of parliament (MP) for Habiganj-4 constituency, from leaving the country.

    The court passed this order on Monday (May 26) morning following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

    In the application, the ACC said that there are allegations of assets beyond known income against Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon. Therefore, a ban on his travel abroad has been sought for the sake of investigation.

    It is learned that former member of parliament Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon was arrested on October 21 in a case of attempted murder of Jubo Dal leader Hridoy Mia.

    Jubo Dal leader Hridoy Mia was shot in Mirpur in the capital on July 19 during a student-public movement. Later, he filed an attempt to murder case at Mirpur Model Police Station, making Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon the third accused. He has also been remanded in this case.

    Meanwhile, on September 11, Chunarughat Upazila Jubo Dal convener Nasir Uddin filed a case against 200 people, including Barrister Sumon, naming 97 accused. The case alleges that on July 16, when people gathered at the roundabout of Shayestaganj Notun Bridge under the banner of the student movement against discrimination, a large crowd of students and people gathered there. At around 4:30 pm, on the orders of Barrister Sumon, the accused attacked the procession with country-made weapons, injuring people from various walks of life.

    Later, when Barrister Sumon was arrested in the capital Dhaka, he was also remanded in this Chunarughat case by showing a short arrest.

    In addition, according to another case source from Mirpur Police Station, on July 19, Adham Bin Amin was protesting at Mirpur-10 intersection demanding quota reform. At that time, police and Awami League leaders and activists opened fire, and he was shot in both knees. His brother Akibun Noor filed an attempt to murder case in this incident on October 22. Meanwhile, according to sources in the Khilgaon Police Station murder case, Mizanur Rahman was shot in the leg in Banasree area under Khilgaon Police Station around 3 pm on July 19 during the anti-discrimination student movement. He was later taken to Pangu Hospital. He died there at 5:40 pm that day due to excessive bleeding. In this incident, the deceased’s father Md. Kamal Hossain filed a murder case with Khilgaon Police Station on September 2.
