BNP leaders and activists stand at Kakrail intersection soaked in rain

BNP leaders and activists of its affiliated organizations continued their sit-in program despite the rain today, demanding that BNP leader Ishraq Hossain be made the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Since Thursday (May 22) morning and despite the rain, leaders and activists were seen taking a stand at the intersection in front of the Kakrail Mosque in the capital.

They said that they had been protesting at Kakrail intersection all night and that it was continuing in the morning.

At around 8:15 am, more than a hundred leaders and activists were seen sitting and standing in front of the police barricade on the right side of the road from Kakrail intersection towards Jamuna. More leaders and activists were scattered around in small groups.

Some leaders and activists who had stayed all night were seen resting. Some were resting by lying down on tarpaulins spread out on the road. Several leaders and activists were also seen chanting slogans in favor of Ishraq on the road leading from Kakrail intersection to Matsya Bhaban.

Today, on the last working day of the week, people going to work through the relevant road are suffering. It has already started raining. Many motorcyclists who came to Kakrail intersection after crossing the barriers set up at the intersection adjacent to Matsya Bhaban were seen being turned back by the leaders and activists who were present.

Since the road was closed, many people who wanted to go from Kakrail intersection to Matsya Bhaban or Hotel Intercontinental had to use other roads.

The leaders and activists participating in the sit-in program were seen chanting slogans together. At that time, they said, ‘Ishraq brothers of the highway, we have not forgotten you’; ‘We want to fight, fight, fight, we want to survive by fighting’; ‘Yamuna in Yamuna, I will not go’, ‘Dealing with oaths, will not, will not’; ‘Interference in court, will not, will not’; They are chanting slogans like ‘Who will win this fight, Ishraq Bhai’s soldiers’ etc.

Law enforcement officers were seen standing alert.

This sit-in program by BNP leaders and activists has been going on for several days. However, on Wednesday (May 21) at around 10:30 am, they took up positions at Matsya Bhaban intersection, the intersection in front of Kakrail Mosque and the surrounding areas. They are continuing their protest by taking up positions on the road.

Yesterday at around 7:30 pm, BNP leader Ishraq Hossain came to the sit-in program and announced that they will continue the movement until they understand the responsibilities of the mayor. He also demanded the resignation of two advisors to the interim government, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and Mahfuz Alam. Ishraq Hossain said that the two advisors should resign to restore the government’s neutrality.

Later, Ishraq Hossain took up a position at the protest site. He stayed with the leaders and activists until 12:45 am last night. Then he returned.
