To realize demands choose open fields, not highways : DMP Commissioner.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjad Ali said, ‘Recently, members of different groups have been occupying highways to realize demands. They think that by doing this, their demands can be realized. But this is not a solution.’He at this time requested to choose open fields or meeting places.
He said these while speaking as the chief guest in the annual general meeting of Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association organized at the Dhaka Club this Wednesday morning.
Stating that the traffic situation in Dhaka city has become fragile due to the occupation of highways, DMP Commissioner said, ‘Especially, problems arise in Mirpur, Airport and Rampura Road. Public sufferings are created.
We saw what a no-police society could look like after August 5 last year. The incidents of stealing, robbery and robbery went up, Sheikh Md. Sajjad Ali said, adding that ‘we have managed to control those crimes quite effectively in the last five months’.
The DMP Commissioner said, ‘The morale of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has been broken after August 5 last year, which created some immediate problems. We are trying to overcome them.’
He said, ‘We want to come out of the behavior that police members have behaved in the past 15 years. That requires time. All my officers need special training. It is not possible to suddenly change 40,000 police members. That is why we are starting training. We are keeping an eye on where and how much force to use. You will already get the proof of which.’
He further said, ‘It is our sacred duty to provide security to the people of Dhaka. That is why we are working. 20 to 25 million people live in Dhaka. Among them, the poor, lower class and unemployed are in high numbers. In addition, various social problems fall on the shoulders of the police.’
The DMP Commissioner said, “Recently, different groups and communities chose the road for small demands. It seems to them that their demands would be fulfilled if they can occupy the road. For this, the fragile traffic system of Dhaka city is in an more fragile state. As a consequence, hours after hours are being spent on road.
He said, ‘The crime that has recently become a cause of concern in the minds of people is robbery. Most of these robberies are involving young drug addicts. Boys aged 20 to 22 are getting involved in various crimes by earning money from drugs. Most of these robberies happen while talking in buses and private cars. Keep your mobile and bags safe to avoid robbers. I have taken an all-out decision against robbers. Besides increasing patrols day and night, the responsibility has been given to the DB police.’
