Elections may be held in December, but not after June 26: Chief Advisor
Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said that elections may be held in December this year, but not after June 2026. He will not participate in the elections. He said this in a report published in The Economist on Thursday (May 15).
The chief advisor said that the interim government has been able to keep inflation and the banking sector stable. However, economic growth is still weak. At the same time, the political situation is also fragile. Stating that the political situation is also fragile, Dr. Yunus said that it has become difficult to bring about major changes even after 9 months of the revolution.
He also said that the consensus commission will formulate the ‘July Charter’ together with the political parties, which will pave the way for holding elections and help in the formation of a ‘new Bangladesh’. On the Awami League issue, Dr. Yunus said that the Election Commission suspended the registration of the Awami League on May 12, as a result of which the party will not be able to participate in the elections.
