Friend killed by friend for 30 taka, main accused arrested
Motijheel Police Station has arrested Rakib (19), the only accused in the murder case in the capital’s Motijheel over a dispute over just 30 taka. He was arrested at 1:15 am on Tuesday (May 20) from the Pir Jangi Mazar area next to Motijheel Ideal School under Motijheel Police Station.
Motijheel Police Station sources said that the victims, Md. Momin (20) and Rakib (19), are two friends. Rakib is a cleaner and Momin is an employee of a shop.
On the evening of May 12, Rakib, Momin and another friend Alamin plucked mangoes from mango trees in AGB Colony and Al Helal Zone and sold them at the AGB Colony raw market for 390 taka. Alamin gave one-third of the 130 taka to Alamin and left. Rakib spent 80 taka out of the remaining 260 taka.
On the same date, at 9 pm, Rakib paid the victim Momin 100 taka for selling mangoes next to the dustbin on the road in front of the Motijheel Postal Officers Colony. When Momin received 100 taka, he demanded another 30 taka, and an argument broke out between Rakib and Momin. After the argument, the two went home.
Later, at 10 am on May 13, the two met next to the dustbin in front of the Motijheel Postal Officers Quarters, and they argued again about the money. At one point in the argument, Rakib slapped Momin.
Angry at this, Momin prepared to hit Rakib with a brick, but Rakib hit Momin on the right side of the neck with the mango-cutting knife he was holding. When the victim Momin fell to the ground, Rakib called a rickshaw and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. When the doctor on duty declared Momin dead, Rakib cleverly escaped from there. A regular case was filed at the DMP’s Motijheel Police Station in this incident.
Motijheel Police Station sources further informed that in the wake of the case, a smart team of Motijheel Police Station arrested Rakib Hossain at approximately 1:20 am on May 20 with the help of information technology.
When the accused Rakib was handed over to the learned court, he admitted his involvement in the incident and gave a confessional statement.
