G-7 Summit: Canada has not invited Modi

The G-7 summit will be held in the Canadian province of Alberta in the middle of this month. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend it. He is not participating due to Delhi’s recent tensions with the North American country. Although Canada has not yet invited Modi to attend the summit. NDTV reported this information in a report on Tuesday, citing Indian news agency PTI.

The media outlet said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not participating in this year’s G-7 summit. As a result, this is the first time since 2018 that he is unable to attend such an event, sources said. The G-7 summit will be held in the Canadian province of Alberta from June 15-17. Various important global issues, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the tense situation in West Asia, will be discussed there.

The sources said that Canada has not yet sent any invitation to Indian Prime Minister Modi. However, even if invited, Modi would not have gone on this visit, because the bilateral relations between India and Canada are currently in such a bad state that extensive preparations and steps would be required before such a visit.

India-Canada relations took a sharp turn for the worse in 2023. At that time, the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that there was evidence of India’s involvement in the murder of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

However, the victory of Liberal Party leader Mark Carney in the parliamentary elections in April this year showed some hope in India. India thought that this might return relations between the two countries to normal.

But according to New Delhi’s assessment, the new Canadian government has not yet taken a clear position on India’s main concerns, especially the activities of pro-Khalistanists on Canadian soil.

In addition, no high-level diplomatic contacts have been fully restored between the two countries. In October 2023, India withdrew its High Commissioner and five diplomats from Canada, and Canada expelled an equal number of diplomats in retaliation.

Canada is the current chair of the G-7. The organization consists of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan. This year’s summit is being hosted by Canada.
