Ishraq supporters hold procession at Nagar Bhaban

For the seventh consecutive day, BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain’s supporters are still protesting at Nagar Bhaban today, demanding that he be sworn in as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

They held processions inside and outside Nagar Bhaban after 10 am on Wednesday (May 21).

Meanwhile, the order is scheduled to be given at noon after hearing the writ petition filed seeking directions not to administer oath to BNP leader Ishraq Hossain as DSCC mayor.

A bench of Justice Md. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury will give the order on Wednesday (May 21).

The same bench fixed the date after hearing on Tuesday (May 20) afternoon. Advocate Mohammad Hossain heard the petition. Deputy Attorney General Mahfuzur Rahman Milon heard for the state and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon heard for Ishraq.

On May 14, a writ petition was filed in the High Court seeking directions not to administer oath to BNP leader Ishraq Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. Along with this, the writ also sought directions to take punitive action against the First Joint District Judge of Dhaka and the Election Tribunal judge who declared BNP Foreign Affairs Committee member Ishraq Hossain as the mayor.

The writ was filed in the relevant branch of the High Court by Dhaka South City Corporation resident Md. Mamunur Rashid. The petitioner’s lawyer is Kazi Akbar Ali.

The Dhaka South City Corporation elections were held on February 1, 2020. Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh of the Awami League became the mayor, defeating BNP’s Ishraq Hossain by a margin of 2.5 million votes. On March 27, BNP leader Ishraq was declared the mayor by the First Joint District Judge of Dhaka and the Election Tribunal judge Md. Nurul Islam. After receiving a copy of the tribunal’s verdict, the constitutional body sought the advice of the Law Ministry on publishing the gazette on April 22. Then, on April 27, the Election Commission-EC published the gazette declaring Ishraq Hossain as the new mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Meanwhile, a sit-in program has been held in front of the city hall for several days demanding Ishraq’s appointment as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
