It is possible to make Mongla port an international port: Sakhawat
Advisor to the Ministry of Shipping Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain said, “If the friendly country India allows the use of their port, it is possible to convert Mongla port into an international port if transit facilities are created with Nepal and Bhutan.” Along with Mongla port, we are going to operate two land ports in Akhaura and Sylhet.
He said these things after inspecting the sea channel and jetty of Mongla port on Wednesday morning.
He said that the G2G project of LoC-3 has been taken up with the Chinese company. Preliminary activities are nearing completion. It will be completed within the next two years. As a result, Mongla Port will be a safe, modern and smart seaport of international standards.
The shipping advisor visited various installations, fields and various sets of jetties in the port area. Before this, he exchanged views with senior officials and employees of the port at 10 am. Mongla Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman presided over the meeting.
During this time, the Shipping Adviser saw a power point presentation on dredging activities of the port, development projects, annual accounts of imports of ships, cargo, containers, vehicles and overall operations of the port. The Director (Administration) of the Port Authority, Heads of Departments, Advisor’s traveling companions and other senior officials of the Port were present on the occasion.
The shipping advisor said, Mongla is the second largest seaport in Bangladesh. This sea port is very important considering its geographical location. The road distance from the capital Dhaka to the port is only 210 km. At the same time, there will be infrastructural development including container terminal and yard when the projects are completed. As a result, the pressure on the Chittagong port will be reduced and the port will be useful for India, Nepal and Bhutan due to the standard communication system, he said.
The adviser said at this time that preparations are underway to give lease to China and South Korea to start 5 closed jute mills in Khulna and Jessore. Besides, this port is so important that Mongla port has rail and sea connections with Dhaka and other parts of the country. So there is no chance of delaying this port. Several projects are underway to make Mongla Port more modern and world-class and some projects have been taken up for future development. However, if one thing is done quickly, how much the facilities of Mongla port will be revealed, that is the promotion of this port internationally. All businessmen related to the port should be given an idea about the facilities of the port, import-export businesses should be invited to use the port. Only then will Mongla port become a world-class modern sea port.
