Low pressure in the Bay of Bengal: Launch and ferry traffic on the Bhola-Barisal route suspended

Due to the effect of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, heavy and moderate rains are accompanied by gale force winds in Lakshmipur. Due to this, warning signal No. 3 has been issued in the river port areas.

All types of watercraft, including launches and ferries, on the Lakshmipur-Bhola-Barisal route have been suspended since midnight on Wednesday (May 28). As a result, many passengers have been suffering as launches and ferries did not leave in the morning. Freight vehicles are waiting, said Shariful Islam, traffic supervisor of the Moju Choudhurirhat Launch and Ferry Ghat in Lakshmipur.

Meanwhile, although there was light rain on Wednesday midnight, moderate and heavy rains have been falling in 5 upazilas of the district, including Kamalnagar-Ramgati on the Meghna coast, since this morning.

It is learned that public life has been disrupted due to continuous rain since the morning. Professionals, including school-college and office-court goers, are having to rush to their workplaces. Due to the rainfall, there has been less movement of people in the markets. Business and commerce are coming to a standstill.

Meanwhile, the rain, which started under the influence of low pressure, may continue until June 1, said Saurabh Hossain, observer of the Ramgati Meteorological Observatory in Lakshmipur.

He said that 52 millimeters of rainfall have been recorded in 24 hours from 6 am on Wednesday to 6 pm today. Warning signal number 1 is in effect in Lakshmipur. Warning signal number 2 has been shown in the river ports of Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chittagong, and Cox’s Bazar areas.

Since low pressure has formed in the sea since morning, there is a possibility of rainfall from today until June 1. Although there is a deep depression after the low pressure, the risk of a cyclone is very low, said the weather observer.
