Mexico beats USA to become North American champion
Mexico defeated the United States to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the record 10th time. The North American giants took home the title for the second time in a row. The two best teams in the tournament faced off in the mega final to decide the title at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Sunday (July 6). Along with Mexico, the United States is the 7-time champion of CONCACAF this season. Mexico took the lead early in the match. Defender Chris Richards headed a perfect free kick from Sebastian Berhalter. The ball hit the crossbar and crossed the goal line – the referee initially hesitated, but the goal was later confirmed. Former Fulham striker Raul Jimenez equalized with a great left-foot shot from a pass by Marcel Ruiz in the 27th minute. The first half ended in a 1-1 draw. Mexico continued to play in an offensive style after the break. However, the team’s forwards failed to score after eluding the opponent’s defense. In the 77th minute of the match, Johan Vazquez headed a free kick from Alexis Vega, and the ball reached Edson Alvarez. Although his header was a goal, it was initially ruled offside. However, VAR analysis showed that US defender Alex Freeman briefly kept him onside. Mexico took the lead. In the end, there were no more goals, and Mexico left the field with a 2-1 victory and retaining their title. The next CONCACAF Gold Cup will be held in 2027. The United States has been the sole or co-host of each tournament so far.
