More than a thousand teachers sacked in Ukhia and Teknaf: Protests block highway

Aggrieved teachers have blocked the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf regional highway for 6 hours and protested against the simultaneous dismissal of 1,250 teachers from several educational institutions in the Rohingya camps of Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar.

The blockade lasted from 7 am to 2 pm on Tuesday (May 3). All the victims are teachers in educational institutions run by UNICEF.

They alleged that Rohingya teachers were kept on their jobs while only locals were sacked citing a funding crisis. The protesters made six demands, including reinstatement of jobs and closure of educational activities in the camps during the funding crisis.

Meanwhile, a 10-km-long traffic jam was created due to the blockade, causing inconvenience to commuters. As of last news, traffic is gradually returning to normal as the road has been reopened.
