Press Secretary responds to India’s reaction
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, said that the issue of holding national elections is entirely an internal matter of Bangladesh. We call on everyone to respect the sovereign will of our people in matters related to elections.
While informing about India’s reaction to banning the activities of the Awami League, he said that the wounds caused by the crimes against humanity committed by the Awami League are still fresh.
Shafiqul Alam said, we have witnessed how the Awami League has completely destroyed our democratic structure, severely narrowed our political space and during their 15-year dictatorship and plunder, the sovereignty of Bangladesh has been pushed towards compromise.
He said, the activities of the Awami League need to be banned to protect national security and sovereignty, ensure the safety of the July Movement activists and protect the plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Regarding the elections, the Press Secretary said, “We recall how the Awami League repeatedly resorted to farcical elections and caused irreparable damage to our electoral process and institutions.” He said, the interim government is engaged in a reform process to rebuild the country’s democratic system.
