Students free 3 students detained after attack on Uttara police station.

After the Uttara Purba Police Station was surrounded by the police in protest against the detention of three students by the police in the capital’s Uttara, an attack was carried out on the Uttara Paschim Police Station and the police were beaten up. It is alleged that the anti-discrimination students carried out the attack on Tuesday afternoon and evening. ASI Mahadev, on duty at the Uttara Paschim Police Station, was injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, the students have released the three students who were detained after the attack on the Uttara Paschim Police Station and the siege of the East Police Station. The three students who were released are Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) student Asiful Haque Robin, Akash of Uttara Town Degree College, and Bappi, a student of BAST in Gazipur.

At around 9 pm on Tuesday, at the premises of the Uttara Purba Police Station, Tahsim Faiz Shakib, a representative of the anti-discrimination student movement and a student of Northern University, said that the police had released the three students who were detained without any reason. Along with this, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the DMP’s Uttara Paschim Police Station, Md. Senior police officials have assured that Hafizur Rahman and Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Sayeed will be transferred and action will be taken against them.

The Inspector (Investigation) of Uttara West Police Station said that the attack was carried out to free the students after they were detained. The matter can be discussed in detail after the investigation.

It is learnt that on Tuesday afternoon, anti-discrimination students organized a meeting on Gausul Azam Avenue Road in Sector 13 of Uttara to form the Uttara West Police Station Committee. During the meeting, a team led by Uttara West Police Station SI Abu Sayeed arrested the three students named Akash, Robin and Bappi and took them to Uttara East Police Station. Meanwhile, when the news of the students’ detention spread, other students of Uttara surrounded the police station and held a protest march to free them. At one stage, they blocked the highway and attacked Uttara West Police Station and beat up the police. In this, ASI Mahadev of Uttara West Police Station was injured.

Hearing the news of the attack on the police station, Uttara Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Rawnak Jahan, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) Ahmed Ali, Uttara Zone Assistant Commissioner Saddam Hossain and other police officers visited the scene. Later, the police held a discussion with the protesting students in the computer lab room of Uttara Purba Police Station. The students calmed down after being assured by the police.

Student Tahsim Faiz Sakib said, “Those who had filed an extortion complaint in our name were caught while extorting money. Again, the police arrested three of our comrades on their false charges. But we waited at the police station for three hours to find out the reason for the arrest. But they made us sit without giving any good answer. Later, when we were forced to start a protest, a senior police officer came and released them.” Uttara Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Rawnak Jahan told us, “I did not give any order to arrest those students. The three students will be arrested and brought to the police station and the matter of harassment will be investigated.” If the allegations are found to be true, he will take action against those responsible.

The victim student Asiful Haque Robin said, we were listing the anti-discrimination student movement in Uttara. At that time, Uttara West Police Station SI Abu Sayeed brought us. When asked about the reason for the arrest, he said, a case has been filed in our name in Uttara East Police Station. Then from Uttara West Police Station, he brought us to Uttara East Police Station. Then the Uttara East Police Station police said, there is no case in their name. Why should we arrest them?

He also said, “We take the risk and arrest the Awami League, we arrest the robbers. But the OC of Uttara West Police Station Hafizur Rahman takes credit. Again, that OCE files complaints in the name of the students. But the OCE is the one who deals in reckless bribery.”
