    The UN wants to know what happened in 46 days

    What happened in Bangladesh during the 46 days from July 1 to August 15, centered on the students’ movement; How many people were injured; The UN is trying to find out the details of the human rights violations and who is responsible for them. In continuation of this, the representatives of the United Nations Human Rights Office are now in Bangladesh at the invitation of the interim government, their multi-faceted investigation is going on. Meanwhile, their fact-finding mission has written to the police headquarters and asked the police for a bunch of information. The UN investigation team will analyze the statements of various law enforcement agencies and individuals, victims, law enforcement officials, medical personnel and eyewitnesses, collect photographs and video footage of the period and prepare a report.

    It is known, by letter to the Fact-Finding Mission police headquarters, how many people were killed across the country from July 1 to August 15, what is their professional identity, how many people were injured, how many cases were registered, how many people were arrested, how many rounds were fired by the police against the student movement. During the agitation, some officials ordered the field police to shoot, how many people died in the police firing, which area has the most violence, what kind of violence has taken place – wanted to know more information. Apart from this, they asked the police to know how many people were injured from July 1 to August 5, and how many people were injured from August 5 to August 15.

    According to the police sources, according to the demand of the investigation team of the fact-finding mission, the police headquarters has already sent a letter to all the police units to bring information from all over the country. According to the instructions of the headquarters, the data collection work of various units is at the final stage. After receiving the information from all the units, the police headquarters will hand it over to the investigation team of the fact-finding mission.

    The movement started from July 1 under the banner of anti-discrimination student movement demanding reform of quota in government jobs. After mid-July, law and order forces started using force to quell the movement. At that time, the leaders and activists of ruling parties including Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League joined forces with the police in various areas of the country including the capital. In some places, the leaders and activists of the ruling party were seen firing on the agitators. After this, the students’ movement turned into a party to the fall of the government. At that time, different political parties, social organizations, professional organizations, cultural organizations and people from different classes joined the students’ movement. At that time, law and order forces including the police in different parts of the country, including the capital, used lethal bullets to suppress the movement of the students. But in the end, the Sheikh Hasina government was swept away by the overwhelming current of student movement. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country and took refuge in India.

    The Central Sub-Committee on Health and the National Citizen Committee jointly formed by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement released the preliminary list of 1,581 people killed in the student-public movement in a press conference yesterday. According to the information given in the press conference, more than 31 thousand students were injured in the student movement. They also said that the information of many injured has come multiple times and the names of many have not been added to the list yet.

    It is known that the fact-finding mission of the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights is conducting an independent and impartial investigation into the allegations of human rights violations that took place between July 1 and August 15. The fact-finding team will establish facts, identify responsibility, analyze root causes and make specific recommendations for Bangladesh to prosecute past human rights violations and prevent their recurrence. After the on-site examination and data analysis, the UN Human Rights Office will publish a detailed human rights report containing key findings, conclusions and recommendations. Their report will give a picture of what happened in Bangladesh in the 46 days from July 1 to August 15.
