Two sisters drown in canal while fetching cows
Two children named Maria (11) and Lamia (9) drowned in a canal in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar. Their bodies were recovered from the canal in Gokarna Union of the upazila on Saturday (May 31) morning.
The deceased children are two sisters. They are the daughters of expatriate Minar Ali of Gokarna village.
Police and locals said that on Friday (May 30) afternoon, they were going to fetch cows through the canal of Titas’s connection company in Gokarna Union. At that time, the children were swept away in the water due to the strong current in the canal. They could not be found despite a lot of searching.
Later, fire service and police members reached the spot and conducted a rescue operation. They were not found till late at night.
Finally, the bodies of the two children were found in the canal between 7 am and 9 am on Saturday. Their relatives recovered their frozen bodies.
Confirming the incident, Nasirnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Khairul Alam said that the children were two sisters, neither of whom knew how to swim. It was difficult to find their bodies as they were swept away by the strong current of the canal. When their bodies were found floating in the canal water in the morning, the police and relatives brought their frozen bodies home.
Since there was no complaint from the family, the bodies of the children were handed over to the family without an autopsy.
