    4 arrested for assaulting woman

    In a trivial incident in Jhikargachha, Jessore, the family of a woman named Fazila Champa (45) had her hair cut off by her divorced daughter-in-law’s family members. During this, she was beaten and tortured by smearing ink on her face. She was tortured last Sunday evening when she went to visit her divorced daughter-in-law in Beneali village of Jhikargachha upazila.

    The victim, Fazila Khatun, is the daughter of Torab Morol of Chapatla village of Jhikargachha upazila. The video of her torture has gone viral on Facebook.

    The victim filed a case with Jhikargachha police station naming six people and accusing 5-6 unknown people. Later, the police arrested four people.

    The arrested are Shimul Hossain, son of Abdul Hamid of Baneali Kalabaganpara in Jhikargachha, Sharmin Akhter Rumi, wife of Ibrahim Khalil of Padmapukur village, Roni Begum, wife of Mofizur driver of Beneali village, and Rahima, wife of Mukul Biswas of Padmapukur village. They were sent to jail through the court on Monday.

    Fazila Champa said that her son Raihan married Bithi, daughter of Mukul Biswas of neighboring Padmapukur village, two years ago. After the marriage, they recently separated as a family. After the separation, Bithi married Shimul, son of Abdul Hamid of Beneali village in Gadkhali union of the same upazila. On Sunday, around 3:30 pm, Fazila Begum went to Beneali village to visit her former daughter-in-law Bithi. At that time, Bithi’s new husband Shimul Hossain, aunt Sharmin Akter Rumi, aunt-in-law Roni Begum, mother Rahima Begum, her husband and Bithi’s father’s house people cut off her hair and painted her face with ink.

    She said that at that time, they beat her indiscriminately with bamboo sticks and physically tortured her. Many other women and men present kept videotaping the entire incident. Many people kept cheering during such brutality. They did not stop at just beating her. From afternoon to night, she was tied to a pillar of Shimul’s house and tried to hand her over to the police station with country-made weapons in the evening.

    Fazila alleged that the accused threatened to do more harm if she complained anywhere. After being released from there, she filed a complaint with the police station.

    Abul Kashem, a member of Ward 8 of Godkhali Union Parishad (UP), said, “I heard that the woman was detained and tortured on suspicion of practicing amulet charms (magic). It is not right to torture a person like this.”

    In this regard, Bablur Rahman Khan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhikargachha Police Station, said that Fazila Champa had gone to her new husband’s house to visit her divorced daughter-in-law Bithi. Bithi’s husband and father’s family members detained Fazila and cut her hair. She was beaten up at that time. A case has been registered in this incident, mentioning the names of six people. Four accused named in the complaint have been arrested and sent to jail through the court. The operation to arrest the remaining accused is ongoing.
